Naming of McAdie Lane, Ararat

Council is considering giving a name to the unnamed laneway that runs between Elizabeth and McGibbony Streets, parallel to Vincent and Palmer Streets in Ararat.

A former resident who once lived nearby has suggested the name McAdie Lane, to honour the McAdie family and their long connection to the area.

Ian McAdie lived on this street for almost 60 years and was well-known in the local community. He helped start the Ararat Bird Club, which met regularly at the Angling Club Hall, and was a dedicated volunteer at many local events and facilities. Ian gave his time at the Ararat Velodrome, helped at the trotting track between races, and even operated the mobile start gates when they were first introduced. He also played a key role in the Golden Gateway Parade and contributed to many community activities over the years.

Council officers have checked the proposed name and found that McAdie Lane meets Geographic Names Victoria guidelines. There’s no other road with the same name within 30 kilometres, and while it sounds somewhat like “McReady Track” in Ararat Regional Park, the chances of confusion are low. The “Lane” road type is suitable, given the narrow roadway.

Before a decision is made, Council wants to hear from the community. The proposal to name the laneway McAdie Lane will be shared for public feedback for at least 30 days. Nearby property owners will be notified directly, and residents can share their thoughts on Engage Ararat using the form below.

Your input will help Council decide whether to proceed with officially naming the laneway.
