Ensuring accessibility for all members of the community is a fundamental aspect of an inclusive and functional public space.

Establishing a designated disability drop-off area for disability vans and maxi taxis to safely unload their clients in Barkly Street will improve safety, convenience, and accessibility for individuals with disabilities and their carers.

A clearly marked drop-off zone will:

  • ensure that passengers can safely exit vehicles with adequate space for mobility aids
  • significantly reduce the risk of accidents or injuries due to hurried or improper unloading
  • allow transport providers to safely unload passengers without obstructing traffic flow.

The drop-off zone will be strategically located at the road bend outside Quinn & Co Eyewear, replacing the currently designated motorcycle parking area. This central location will provide greater traffic visibility, as well as improved access to local businesses and public amenities for those with disabilities.

Council will proceed with the design phase of the project following engagement with Barkly Street businesses and the community.

Community feedback on this project is open until 5pm on Wednesday 26 March 2025.
